Business Retail Grants
In partnership with the city of Chardon, Chardon Tomorrow offers a Business Retail Grant to businesses in Chardon's Uptown business area. The purpose of the Retail Business Grant Program is to foster a retail business friendly environment, to attract new retail businesses, and to assist existing retail businesses with expansion / investment activities.
One of the stated goals in the City of Chardon's Comprehensive Plan is to "Preserve and reinforce Chardon Square as the city's real and emotional "Center" and focus of the community's identity, including historic character, traditional seat of city and county government, viable "main street" businesses, and surrounding housing." The goal of the Retail Business Grant Program is to strengthen the retail mix in Uptown Chardon via variety and complementary stores.
Design Assistance
Chardon Tomorrow provides downtown businesses and property owners with general design assistance and guidance on historic preservation projects. Although we do not offer construction documents, we can work with you to realize your vision through providing resources and contacts that can help. Chardon Tomorrow can also assist with building research, locating historic photographs, paint selection, the zoning review process, and other technical preservation needs. All of this is provided at no cost to our Business Partners.
Historic Preservation Incentive Programs
Many properties in downtown Chardon are potentially eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places, and may be eligible to participate in state and federal historic preservation tax credits. Property owners who carry out a substantial rehabilitation of a historic property must meet the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation for both exterior and interior work on the historic property. These programs are administered by the Ohio Development Services Agency, Office of Redevelopment.
Federal Historic Preservation Tax Credit - provides owners of properties listed on the National Register the opportunity to apply for a federal income tax credit equal to 20% of the rehabilitation cost. Only income-producing properties are eligible to participate in the program (excludes condos and single-family homes). The program is administered by the Ohio Historic Preservation Office, in coordination with the National Park Service.
Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credit - provides owners of "designated historic buildings" the opportunity to apply for a tax credit equal to 25% of the qualified rehabilitation cost. Although no income-producing requirement, projects are scored based on economic impact, project readiness, local support, and location. The program is administered by Ohio Development Services Agency, in partnership with the Ohio Historic Preservation Office.
